What's the difference between Botox and dermal fillers?

To understand what injectables do, it’s important to understand what happens to the aging face. Sun exposure weakens the collagen and elastic tissue of the skin, which causes sagging and wrinkling. How long do neurotoxin and dermal fillers last?

The length of time between treatments varies depending on the type.

Botulinum toxin injectables last three to six months. Beyond that time, muscle mobility gradually returns, although patients may notice wrinkles appear less pronounced because the muscles may become weaker over time, especially with repeated injections.

Dermal fillers last between three months to three years on average, depending on the kind used:

Collagen, a well-known skin plumper, lasts for two or three months.

Hyaluronic acid gel lasts up to a year. Brand names include Juvederm, Belotero, Restylane, Perlane and Voluma.

Calcium hydroxylapatite products last up to a year. Brand names include Radiesse.

Poly-L-lactic acid lasts one to three years. Brand names include Sculpta Aesthetic.

Polymethylmethacrylate is considered a permanent filler option. Brand names include Artefil.

Fat injections use fat from your own body removed during liposuction, and these treatments can last one to three years.

How else is Botox used?

At Yale Medicine's Botulinum Program, botulinum injections are used to treat neurological disorders, outside of the dermatology field. 810-DIODE

Hair Removal: This features a large spot size with built-in contact cooling and a hertz rate of up to 10-pulses per second.

The 810 nm diode laser mode is specifically designed to eliminate unwanted hair in both small and large areas of the body. During treatment, the handpiece will be directed at problem areas to destroy hair follicles. This essentially disables them from future hair growth.

Patients will notice that unwanted hair starts to thin out and slough off after the first treatment session. However, a series of 5 – 10 treatments spaced several weeks apart is required for optimal results.

Q-SWITCHED YAG/KTP

Tattoo Removal: The Q-switched Yag laser has been the laser of choice for removing tattoos for over 20 years. The dual wavelengths (1064nm/532nm) remove many tattoo pigments.

This is ideal for those people who choose to have tattoos removed for varied reasons, ranging from a bad decision when young to a relationship breakup and career aspirations – among others.

The Rohrer Spectrum platform features a specialized tattoo removal handpiece known as the Q-Switched Yag or KTP Laser. This device employs dual wavelengths to eliminate more tattoo color pigments in less time than lasers that use a single wavelength.

The handpiece essentially works by breaking tattoo pigments into tiny particles to be removed through the body’s natural filtering system. The number of treatments required to achieve the desired results will depend on the extent of the patient’s problem areas.

LONG PULSED YAG

Vascular Reduction: Exceptionally, the Yag energy can heat and damages blood vessels, which causes them to collapse. The Long Pulsed Yag can also remove other vascular lesions, such as a cherry angioma.

In addition, spider veins are a relatively common aesthetic problem caused by sun damage, hormonal changes, pregnancy, and aging. People who sit or stand for extended durations of time may also experience this aesthetic issue. The Rohrer Spectrum laser comes with a Long Pulsed Yag Laser handpiece designed to get rid of unsightly spider veins and reveal a smoother and youthful appearance.

This handpiece matches the laser wavelength to the hemoglobin color in areas with unwanted spider veins. The system will then discharge longer pulses to heat the veins and cause them to close off. In addition to spider veins, this setting can also address various vascular lesions.

It is important to note that this treatment works best for smaller veins of 3mm or less. This device can treat various colored veins, but most effective for treating red veins. It will take approximately 3 – 5 sessions for them to disappear for blue, purple, and darker-colored veins.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

The Intense Pulsed Light includes 4 filters that can be used for a multitude of non-ablative procedures, including hair reduction, acne reduction, and the removal of vascular and pigmented lesions.

This handpiece is not technically a laser. However, it simultaneously uses a wide variety of laser wavelengths. The device comes with filters that plastic surgeons and aestheticians can use to deliver different non-invasive treatments ranging from acne reduction to vascular issues, hair reduction, and removal of sun damage and aging spots.

Who Should Receive The Rohrer Spectrum Laser Treatments?

A lot of people are qualified to receive spectrum laser treatments. However, the following are not good candidates for spectrum laser treatment, which include:

• Those who are taking certain acne medication

Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that involves puncturing the skin with tiny, sterilized needles using a handheld drum or pen-shaped device. These tiny wounds cause the skin to produce more collagen and elastin by stimulating the skin to repair itself naturally through a process called dermal remodeling. This process heals and helps to rejuvenate the skin. Microneedling can be used to treat things like acne scarring, sun damage, surgical scars, burns, enlarged pores, wrinkles, and stretch marks.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy uses the infusion of concentrated platelets harvested from the patient’s blood to accelerate healing in a specific area. It contains two elements – plasma, the liquid portion of the blood, and platelets. The platelets play a vital role in healing and contain growth factors that stimulate cell reproduction and tissue regeneration in the treated area. The addition of PRP to microneedling produces superior results over microneedling alone.

Microneedling is safe for all skin colors and types. Microneedling does not cause heat-induced skin damage, which can sometimes happen with laser technology and doesn’t affect the skin’s pigment. The treatment is well tolerated and requires minimal recovery time.

This type of treatment is not recommended in patients with the following conditions: Hepatitis C, HIV or AIDS, any type of blood cancer, or skin cancer on the area to be treated. Also, patients who have used Accutane in the preceding six months, those with wounds or infections, who have undergone radiation in the past year, who are pregnant, or breastfeeding are not considered candidates.
